Disillusionment and Developing Compassion: an excerpt

We often think of Neptune as the planet of disillusionment, because Neptunian dreams and expectations are often shattered in the face of reality yet he isn’t alone. Saturn also experiences fierce disillusionment, especially in love. The Saturnian expectations can be just as extreme as those of Neptune, but lie on the opposite end of the spectrum. Saturn wants structure, loyalty, commitment, discipline, and focus in his relationships. He wants to be loved and to share love but may not know how because the fears run too deep. Saturn castrated his father and gained a kingdom but lived in fear that he would be castrated and lose it all to his own sons; he swallowed his children to prevent this from happening only to experience betrayal on all levels – his mother, wife, and children all turned on him, dethroned him, and split his kingdom amongst themselves while he was sent to Tartarus. He was the fallen angel, banished from the light, isolated, and unloved. When Saturn is strong in the nativity or within a partnership, the Saturnian (or the person more challenged by Saturn in a relationship) may feel unworthy of experiencing the lighter side of love. It may feel ‘fake’ or otherwise unreal, as if enjoying oneself indicates a lack of seriousness or indicates the inability for a relationship to stand the test of time.  Saturn is so attuned to time and its cycles, any hint that a relationship may end up being nothing but a short-term love affair may terminate the connection before it ever gets off the ground. A Saturnian may prefer (or think he prefers) to be alone rather than engage in a relationship that may end with him being rejected and emotionally dethroned by his lover. Taking risk without a known reward is not an action Saturn generally feels comfortable with, and in love, opening his heart enough to allow another in is a huge risk but one he often accepts as one he must take; just...
